Which U.S. president signed the 1968 law that temporarily moved Veterans Day to a Monday?

The story behind the answer

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which temporarily moved Veterans Day to a Monday.

The law was enacted in 1968 as part of an effort to create more three-day weekends for federal employees and the public. It moved several holidays, including Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day, to Mondays.

The Monday observance of Veterans Day began in 1971. Many veterans’ organizations opposed moving the holiday away from its traditional November 11 date because the date has direct historical importance as the anniversary of the World War I armistice.

Congress later returned Veterans Day to November 11. The restoration took effect in 1978, separating Veterans Day from the other holidays that continued to follow Monday-based scheduling under the act.
