Gerald Ford was president during the 1976 United States Bicentennial.
The Bicentennial celebrated 200 years since the Declaration of Independence. Ford took part in major national observances, including ceremonies in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and delivered remarks connected with the anniversary.
Ford became president in August 1974 after Richard Nixon resigned. He therefore served during the final phase of Bicentennial planning and throughout the 1976 anniversary year. Jimmy Carter succeeded him in January 1977.
The Bicentennial was not a single festival in one city. Congress created the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission in 1966, later replacing it with the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration. The final celebration included local events, tall-ship gatherings, exhibitions, parades, and fireworks across the country.
