Which U.S. president has a printed message on the Voyager Golden Record?

The story behind the answer

Jimmy Carter has a printed message on the Voyager Golden Record.

Carter was president of the United States when Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 launched in 1977, and his signed statement was included as a pair of images on the record. The message presents the spacecraft as a gift from Earth and expresses hope that a future civilization might understand it.

The Golden Record was assembled by a committee chaired by astronomer Carl Sagan. It contains 116 images, natural sounds, music from different cultures, and spoken greetings in 55 languages. Its cover also includes symbolic instructions explaining how the record might be played and how Earth’s location can be identified.

A common mix-up is confusing Carter’s printed contribution with the record’s audio greetings. United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim supplied an introductory spoken greeting, while Carter’s contribution was written. The record travels aboard both Voyager spacecraft.
