USS Scorpion disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean in 1968 and was later found near the Azores.
Scorpion was a Skipjack-class nuclear-powered attack submarine. It was reported overdue after failing to return to Norfolk on 27 May 1968 while travelling home from a Mediterranean deployment. All 99 crew members aboard were lost.
The wreck was located several months later approximately 400 miles south-west of the Azores, lying at a depth of about 3,000 metres. The precise cause of the sinking has never been conclusively established. Investigators examined possibilities including a torpedo accident, mechanical failure and other onboard events.
Scorpion is often confused with USS Thresher, which was lost during deep-diving trials off Massachusetts in 1963. The two disasters were separate incidents involving different submarine classes and operating areas.
