Which US national park is the most visited?

The story behind the answer

Which US national park is the most visited? Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the correct answer.

Straddling Tennessee and North Carolina, Great Smoky Mountains National Park has ranked as the most visited US national park for many years. Its combination of free entrance, easy road access, scenic mountain drives, waterfalls and extensive hiking trails helps explain its extraordinary popularity.

The park was established in 1934 and formally dedicated in 1940. It protects more than 522,000 acres of the southern Appalachian Mountains, including sections of the Appalachian Trail. Cades Cove, an 11-mile loop road through a historic valley, is one of its best-known attractions.

Visitors sometimes confuse “most visited national park” with the most visited national-park site or recreation area, which can produce different rankings. The Smokies’ appeal is not only visitor numbers: the park is also exceptionally biodiverse, with thousands of documented species and important forests, streams and mountain habitats.
