Northeast Greenland National Park is the world’s largest national park by area, covering about 972,000 square kilometres.

The park occupies much of northeastern and interior Greenland, including extensive portions of the Greenland Ice Sheet and ice-free coastal areas. It was first established in 1974 and expanded to its present size in 1988. Its scale makes it larger than many countries, including Tanzania, although it is smaller than Egypt.

The park is not the same as the world’s largest protected area overall, because some marine protected areas are larger. It is also Greenland’s only national park and the northernmost national park in the world. Despite its enormous size, it has no permanent human population. Musk oxen, polar bears, walruses, Arctic foxes, seals, narwhals, and beluga whales are among the species found there.
