Which U.S. future president served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the war?
Answer
Theodore Roosevelt
Answer
Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Spanish-American War. He resigned the post in May 1898 to organize and lead the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, later known as the Rough Riders.
Roosevelt had already used the Navy Department position to advocate for modernization, better preparedness, and an expanded fleet. When war with Spain began in April 1898, he believed military action offered a chance to demonstrate American power. His resignation allowed him to take a direct combat role rather than remain a civilian administrator.
The other choices held important positions in American public life but did not serve as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the war. William McKinley was president, while Woodrow Wilson and William Howard Taft were not Navy Department officials in that role. Roosevelt later became vice president and succeeded McKinley as president after McKinley’s assassination in 1901.
