Which U.S. coin featured a colonial drummer in its 1975–1976 Bicentennial design?
Answer
Washington quarter
Answer
Washington quarter
The Washington quarter featured a colonial drummer in its 1975–1976 Bicentennial design.
The special quarter displayed the dual date 1776–1976 and replaced the usual eagle reverse with a colonial drummer. The design was created by Jack L. Ahr, whose initials appear on the coin. John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington remained on the obverse.
Congress authorized temporary redesigns for the quarter, half dollar, and dollar to mark the 200th anniversary of American independence. The coins were issued with the double date rather than a normal single year.
The quarter is sometimes remembered simply as a “Bicentennial coin,” but the three denominations had different reverse designs. The Kennedy half dollar showed Independence Hall, while the Eisenhower dollar showed the Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon. The drummer is therefore the identifying image of the Bicentennial quarter.
