Which university namesake gave Alaska's Columbia Glacier its name?

The story behind the answer

Columbia Glacier was named after Columbia University.

The name dates to the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899, whose organizers applied names associated with prominent American colleges to several glaciers in the area. Columbia University was therefore commemorated in the glacier’s name, rather than one of the other Ivy League universities listed as alternatives.

The university namesake can be easy to confuse with the glacier’s geography: Columbia Glacier is in Alaska’s Prince William Sound and is unrelated to the Columbia River or the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is also distinct from Columbia University’s campus in New York City, although the glacier’s name does honor that institution. Today, the glacier is widely studied because of its dramatic retreat and unusually rapid ice movement.
