Which university hired Georgia O’Keeffe to teach art in 1914?
Answer
University of Virginia
Answer
University of Virginia
The University of Virginia hired Georgia O’Keeffe to teach art in 1914.
O’Keeffe taught at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville from 1914 to 1915. Her appointment followed earlier teaching work in Texas and her growing interest in developing a personal approach to abstraction rather than simply reproducing academic models.
While at Virginia, she made abstract charcoal drawings that emphasized line, movement, and feeling. Alfred Stieglitz later exhibited some of these drawings in New York, helping bring O’Keeffe’s work to the attention of the American avant-garde.
Her Virginia teaching position is sometimes overlooked because her career is more commonly associated with New York and New Mexico. It was nevertheless an important stage between her formal training and her emergence as a major modernist painter.
