Which university employed Georgia O'Keeffe as an art instructor in 1915?
Answer
University of Virginia
Answer
University of Virginia
The University of Virginia employed Georgia O'Keeffe as an art instructor in 1915.
O'Keeffe taught art at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville during 1915 and 1916. While there, she created a series of abstract charcoal drawings that reduced natural forms to expressive lines, shapes, and tonal relationships.
She sent some of these drawings to her friend Anita Pollitzer, who showed them to Alfred Stieglitz in New York. Stieglitz exhibited them at his gallery in 1916, helping launch the public phase of O'Keeffe’s modernist career.
The University of Virginia was not the institution where she completed a conventional degree. Her education included the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League, and later classes at Columbia University Teachers College. Her teaching posts were important because they gave her time and space to develop a personal approach to abstraction.
