Which university employed Georgia O'Keeffe as a teaching assistant in 1916?
Answer
University of Virginia
Answer
University of Virginia
The University of Virginia employed Georgia O'Keeffe as a teaching assistant in 1916.
O'Keeffe taught at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville during the summer of 1916. She had recently completed a period of artistic reassessment and was beginning to gain attention for her abstract charcoal drawings.
Her teaching career also included positions in Texas and South Carolina. At West Texas State Normal College, later West Texas A&M University, she taught art from 1916 to 1918 and developed a close visual relationship with the surrounding landscape.
The University of Virginia appointment is sometimes overlooked because O'Keeffe is better known as a painter than as an educator. Teaching, however, supported her financially during the years when she was establishing her independent artistic direction.
