Which university employed C.S. Lewis as a tutor in English literature from 1925?
Answer
University of Oxford
Answer
University of Oxford
The University of Oxford employed C.S. Lewis as a tutor in English literature from 1925.
Lewis became a Fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1925. He remained there for nearly three decades, teaching medieval and Renaissance English literature and developing a reputation as a scholar, lecturer, and writer. His Oxford years also brought him into close contact with J.R.R. Tolkien and other members of the literary group known as the Inklings.
Lewis’s Oxford post is sometimes confused with his later Cambridge appointment. In 1954 he became the first holder of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he worked until his death.
Oxford was therefore the university most closely associated with Lewis’s long teaching career. His academic interests included allegory, literary history, and the works of writers such as John Milton. His professional life combined university teaching with increasingly influential Christian apologetics and fiction.
