Which university did Georgia O'Keeffe attend in 1912 to study with Alon Bement?
Answer
University of Virginia
Answer
University of Virginia
Georgia O'Keeffe attended the University of Virginia in 1912 to study with art educator Alon Bement.
O'Keeffe had already studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York, but her direction changed after she encountered Arthur Wesley Dow's ideas about art. Dow emphasized composition, line, color, and personal expression rather than simply copying appearances. Alon Bement, who taught at the University of Virginia, was an important interpreter of Dow's approach.
O'Keeffe went to Charlottesville during the summer of 1912 and later returned to teach there. Her time at the university helped her absorb a more experimental approach, which soon led to the abstract drawings that Alfred Stieglitz exhibited in New York.
The University of Virginia is sometimes confused with Columbia University because O'Keeffe later lived and worked in New York, but her 1912 study with Bement took place in Charlottesville.
