Which university did C.S. Lewis attend as an undergraduate?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis attended the University of Oxford as an undergraduate.

Lewis studied at Oxford after serving in the First World War. He entered University College, Oxford, in 1917, but his studies were interrupted by military service. He returned after being wounded in France and completed his degree work in the early 1920s.

At Oxford, Lewis pursued a demanding course that included classics, philosophy, and English. He achieved outstanding results and eventually became a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College. Oxford remained his academic base for many years and was central to his friendships with J.R.R. Tolkien and other writers.

Cambridge is a common mix-up because Lewis later held a professorship there from 1954. However, his undergraduate education and most of his Oxford teaching career belong to the University of Oxford. His Cambridge position came much later in his life.
