Which university did C.S. Lewis attend as an undergraduate and tutor before joining Cambridge?
Answer
University of Oxford
Answer
University of Oxford
C.S. Lewis attended the University of Oxford as an undergraduate and later worked there as a tutor before joining Cambridge.
Lewis studied at University College, Oxford, after serving in the First World War. His Oxford education included a demanding sequence of studies in literature, philosophy, and classical languages. He performed exceptionally well, and his academic training shaped the precise, argumentative style found in his later apologetic works.
In 1925, Lewis was elected a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College, Oxford. He remained associated with Oxford for nearly three decades, teaching English literature and participating in the literary circle known as the Inklings. His Oxford colleagues and friends included J.R.R. Tolkien, with whom he discussed mythology, language, and Christian belief.
Lewis did not begin his university career at Cambridge. He moved to Magdalene College, Cambridge, in 1954, when he became the first holder of a newly established chair of medieval and Renaissance English. That move is separate from his earlier Oxford education.
