Which university did C.S. Lewis attend as a student and later teach at?
Answer
University of Oxford
Answer
University of Oxford
C.S. Lewis attended and taught at the University of Oxford.
Lewis entered University College, Oxford, in 1917 after receiving a scholarship. His studies were interrupted by military service during the First World War, but he returned to Oxford in 1919. He completed an unusually broad academic training in classics, philosophy, and English, eventually earning first-class results in several examinations.
In 1925, Lewis became a Fellow and tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford. He remained there for nearly three decades and taught generations of students while producing literary criticism, fiction, and Christian writing. Oxford was also the setting for his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien and the literary group known as the Inklings.
In 1954, Lewis left Oxford for a professorship at the University of Cambridge, where he became the first holder of the newly established Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature. Thus Oxford was both his student home and the university where most of his teaching career began.
