Bronny James committed to the University of Southern California (USC). He announced his decision on May 6, 2023, choosing the Trojans after considering Ohio State and Oregon among his finalists.

James entered USC as a highly publicized four-star recruit and McDonald's All-American. His freshman season was interrupted when he suffered cardiac arrest during a July 2023 practice, caused by a congenital heart defect. After medical clearance, he made his college debut in December and played 25 games, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

A common mix-up is confusing James's college destination with his later professional team. He played one season at USC before entering the 2024 NBA draft.
