Which university awarded Nelson Mandela his law degree through distance study?

The story behind the answer

The University of South Africa awarded Nelson Mandela his law degree through distance study.

Mandela studied by correspondence while imprisoned, completing the requirements for an LLB degree in 1989. The institution, commonly called UNISA, was well suited to students who could not attend a conventional campus, including prisoners and people living far from major cities.

Mandela had earlier studied at the University of Fort Hare and the University of the Witwatersrand, but he did not complete his law degree at either institution. His education continued despite repeated interruptions caused by political activism, arrests, and imprisonment.

The degree is sometimes mistakenly attributed to the University of London because Mandela received study materials associated with external learning. The awarding institution for his LLB was UNISA.
