Which university appointed C.S. Lewis to its first English Literature chair in 1954?
Answer
University of Cambridge
Answer
University of Cambridge
The University of Cambridge appointed C.S. Lewis to its first English Literature chair in 1954.
Lewis became the first holder of the newly established Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University in 1954. He was also made a fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he remained until his death.
Before moving to Cambridge, Lewis had spent most of his academic career at Oxford. He taught at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1925 and became a fellow and tutor there. His Cambridge appointment therefore marked a major second stage in his academic career rather than his first university post.
Readers sometimes associate Lewis exclusively with Oxford because of his long Oxford tenure and membership of the Inklings. Cambridge was nevertheless where he held his named professorship, while Oxford remained central to his earlier teaching and literary life.
