Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the Ugandan national park famous for its mountain gorilla population.

In southwestern Uganda, the park protects 331 square kilometres of ancient lowland and montane forest along the edge of the Albertine Rift and near the Democratic Republic of the Congo border. Its dense vegetation and steep terrain make many areas accessible only on foot, giving the forest its evocative “impenetrable” name.

Bwindi is one of the two main homes of the endangered mountain gorilla, alongside the Virunga Mountains shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The park’s gorillas are known as the Bwindi population and represent almost half of the world’s mountain gorillas. Gorilla tracking began as a tourism activity in 1993, helping fund conservation while requiring strict visitor rules.

Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park also protect mountain gorillas, but they are in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo respectively. Queen Elizabeth National Park is Ugandan, yet it is not the country’s signature mountain-gorilla sanctuary.
