Which type of fruit juice did Dole sell first?

Dole first sold pineapple juice. James Drummond Dole built his Hawaiian agricultural business around pineapples, beginning commercial cultivation on Oahu after arriving in Hawaii in 1899.

The Hawaiian Pineapple Company opened its first cannery in Wahiawa in 1901. Canning made it possible to ship pineapple and pineapple juice from Hawaii to mainland consumers without rapid spoilage. Dole later promoted pineapple nationally through advertising, helping turn a once-exotic tropical fruit into a familiar American grocery item.

Dole’s early juice history is closely tied to advances in food processing. The company’s pineapple operations expanded as improved machinery made peeling, coring, cutting, and packing much faster. In 1911, engineer Henry Ginaca developed a machine that could process up to 100 pineapples per minute.

A common mix-up is assuming Dole began as a broad fruit-and-juice brand. Its original identity was specifically Hawaiian pineapple; bananas, fruit cocktails, and other products became important later. The Dole name was first stamped on cans of pineapple and pineapple juice in 1933.
