Which two brothers founded the original McDonald's restaurant business in San Bernardino?

The story behind the answer

Richard and Maurice McDonald founded the original McDonald's restaurant business in San Bernardino, California.

The brothers opened their first restaurant in 1940 and later developed a faster, more standardized operating system. In 1948 they reorganized the business around a limited menu and speedy counter service, creating the model that later attracted Ray Kroc's attention.

Richard McDonald was commonly known as Dick, while Maurice was commonly known as Mac. Their names are therefore sometimes remembered as “Dick and Mac McDonald,” but both forms identify the same founders.

Ray Kroc did not found the original restaurant. He joined the story later by becoming the company's franchise agent and expanding the brand through a national franchise system.
