Which treaty recognized the independence of the United States after the Revolutionary War?
Answer
Treaty of Paris
Answer
Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris recognized the independence of the United States after the Revolutionary War.
Negotiated in Paris and signed on September 3, 1783, the treaty ended the war between Great Britain and the United States. Britain acknowledged the United States as a free, sovereign, and independent nation. The agreement also set boundaries and addressed debts, property, and prisoners.
The treaty followed the British defeat at Yorktown in 1781, although fighting and diplomatic negotiations continued for nearly two more years. American negotiators included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens. David Hartley signed for Great Britain.
This treaty is different from the Treaty of Paris signed in 1763, which ended the French and Indian War, and from the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. The 1783 agreement is the peace settlement directly associated with American independence.
