Which treaty officially ended the American Revolutionary War, whose independence is celebrated by America250?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris (1783) officially ended the American Revolutionary War.

Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Britain recognized the Thirteen Colonies as free, sovereign, and independent states. The agreement also established extensive boundaries for the new nation, including territory east of the Mississippi River and south of the Great Lakes.

The treaty followed the American victory at Yorktown in 1781, but fighting and diplomatic negotiations continued afterward. The American negotiating team included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens. The Congress of the Confederation ratified the treaty on January 14, 1784.

The Treaty of Paris is sometimes confused with the peace agreements signed separately with France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic. Together, those agreements are known as the Peace of Paris. The 1783 treaty specifically refers to the agreement between Britain and the United States.
