Which mission first landed humans on the Moon for the United States?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 11 was the U.S. mission that first landed humans on the Moon.

NASA launched Apollo 11 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969. The crew consisted of commander Neil Armstrong, command-module pilot Michael Collins, and lunar-module pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin.

Armstrong and Aldrin landed in the lunar module Eagle at Tranquility Base on July 20, while Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia. Armstrong became the first person to walk on the Moon, followed by Aldrin.

Apollo 8 is sometimes mistaken for the first landing because it was the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon. Apollo 10 tested the lunar-landing procedures but stopped short of landing. Apollo 12 followed Apollo 11 and made a precision landing later in 1969.
