Which treaty formally recognized United States independence from Great Britain in 1783?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris formally recognized United States independence from Great Britain in 1783.

The treaty was signed on September 3, 1783, ending the American Revolutionary War. Britain recognized the United States as a sovereign and independent nation. The agreement also set boundaries that extended the new country westward to the Mississippi River and northward to the Great Lakes.

The American negotiators included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens. The treaty was part of a wider set of peace agreements involving Britain and other European powers that had participated in the conflict. The United States Congress ratified the treaty in January 1784.

The Treaty of Paris is sometimes confused with the 1763 treaty of the same name, which ended the Seven Years' War. It is also distinct from the 1783 preliminary articles and from later treaties involving the United States and Britain.
