Which treaty formally ended the American Revolutionary War with Great Britain?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris formally ended the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the United States.

The treaty was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783. It recognized the United States as an independent nation and established its boundaries, extending west to the Mississippi River, south to Spanish Florida, and north toward the Great Lakes.

The American representatives included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay. David Hartley signed for Great Britain on behalf of King George III. The agreement followed preliminary peace articles negotiated in 1782.

The treaty is sometimes confused with the 1778 Treaty of Alliance between the United States and France, which brought France into the war on the American side. It is also distinct from the 1783 peace agreements involving Britain and other European powers.
