Which treaty formally ended the American Revolutionary War, a key event on the road to America250?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris formally ended the American Revolutionary War in 1783.

The treaty was signed on September 3, 1783, by representatives of the United States and Great Britain. Britain recognized the United States as an independent nation and agreed to boundaries that extended west to the Mississippi River, north to the Great Lakes, and south to Spanish Florida.

Fighting had largely stopped after the British defeat at Yorktown in 1781, but the war did not legally conclude until the peace negotiations were completed. The Treaty of Paris is sometimes confused with the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, or the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. The 1783 treaty established the international settlement for the new republic.
