The official name of Schoolhouse Rock!’s Bicentennial history sub-series was America Rock.
Schoolhouse Rock! was a series of short educational cartoons broadcast by ABC, often between Saturday-morning programs. In the months before the 1976 Bicentennial, the producers created a group of segments about American history and government.
The project was initially associated with the broader working title “History Rock,” but its official name became America Rock. The ten segments covered topics such as the founding of the United States, the Constitution, westward expansion, and the structure of government.
Several America Rock songs became especially enduring. “I’m Just a Bill” explains how a proposed bill moves through the legislative process, while “The Preamble” sets the opening words of the U.S. Constitution to music. Although these segments were made for a 1970s anniversary, they continued to circulate in classrooms and on home video, helping make Schoolhouse Rock! one of the most recognizable educational television programs in the United States.
