Which treaty did the United States and Great Britain sign in 1783 to end the American Revolutionary War?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolutionary War between the United States and Great Britain.

Representatives signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Great Britain recognized the United States as a free, sovereign, and independent nation, ending its claim to govern the thirteen former colonies. The agreement also set boundaries for the new country, including territory reaching west to the Mississippi River.

The treaty followed the military surrender at Yorktown in 1781, but Yorktown did not legally conclude the war. Fighting and diplomatic negotiations continued afterward. The United States ratified the treaty in January 1784, completing the formal peace process.

The Treaty of Paris is distinct from the Peace of Paris, a broader group of agreements involving Britain, France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic. It is also different from the 1783 Treaty of Versailles, which formed part of that wider settlement.
