Which train service links Sydney and Perth across Australia?

The story behind the answer

The Indian Pacific is the train service linking Sydney and Perth across Australia.

The service began in 1970, after the completion of a standard-gauge rail route across the continent. Its name combines the Indian and Pacific oceans, reflecting the journey between Perth on the west coast and Sydney on the east coast. The route crosses the Nullarbor Plain, one of the most distinctive landscapes on the trip.

The Indian Pacific is a long-distance passenger service rather than a single railway line. It uses tracks belonging to several rail operators and crosses major parts of Australia’s transcontinental network. The full journey is commonly described as one of the world’s longest train journeys.

It is often confused with The Ghan, which runs north–south between Adelaide, Alice Springs, and Darwin. The Indian Pacific instead travels broadly east–west across southern Australia.
