Which traditional Chinese art uses layers of tree resin to create glossy decorated objects?

The story behind the answer

Chinese lacquerware uses layers of tree resin to create glossy decorated objects.

The resin traditionally comes from the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum. Artisans apply many thin coats to a prepared wood, bamboo, metal, or other core. The surface is allowed to harden between applications, then may be carved, polished, painted, or inlaid.

Chinese lacquer has a very long history, with archaeological examples dating back thousands of years. Red and black are especially characteristic colors, although lacquerware can include many pigments and techniques. Carved red lacquer, known as diaoqi, is a particularly elaborate form.

Lacquerware is not fired like porcelain and is not the same as cloisonné. Its durability, moisture resistance, and deep gloss made it useful for bowls, boxes, furniture, trays, and ceremonial objects.
