Which Northern Song Chinese painting by Zhang Zeduan depicts daily life along the Bian River in Kaifeng?

The story behind the answer

Zhang Zeduan’s Along the River During the Qingming Festival depicts daily life along the Bian River in Northern Song Kaifeng.

The handscroll is traditionally dated to the early 12th century, during the reign of Emperor Huizong. It presents a crowded urban landscape with bridges, boats, shops, inns, carts, animals, and people from different social groups. The painting is valued for its detailed record of city life as well as its artistic skill.

Despite its title, the scroll is not simply a scene of a religious celebration. “Qingming” refers to the season and festival period, while scholars have debated the precise date and meaning of the scene. The original is held by the Palace Museum in Beijing, and many later copies and adaptations exist.

It is often confused with monumental Song landscapes such as Fan Kuan’s Travelers Among Mountains and Streams, but Zhang’s work focuses on urban activity rather than towering mountains.
