Which trade agreement replaced the Trans-Pacific Partnership after the United States withdrew?

The story behind the answer

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership replaced the Trans-Pacific Partnership after the United States withdrew.

Eleven remaining TPP participants signed the CPTPP in Santiago, Chile, on 8 March 2018. The agreement incorporated most of the original TPP text but suspended a number of provisions associated with intellectual property and other areas.

The United States signed the original TPP in 2016 but withdrew in January 2017 before ratification. The CPTPP therefore proceeded without the United States and entered into force on 30 December 2018 for the first group of ratifying countries.

CPTPP is often confused with RCEP, another major Asia-Pacific agreement. RCEP includes ASEAN and its partners, while CPTPP grew directly out of the earlier TPP negotiations.
