Which Tolkien story features the dragon Smaug as its main dragon antagonist?

The story behind the answer

The Hobbit features Smaug as its main dragon antagonist.

Smaug is the dragon who occupies the Lonely Mountain in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. He drove the Dwarves of Erebor from their kingdom and seized their treasure, including the Arkenstone. Bilbo Baggins enters the mountain as part of Thorin Oakenshield’s company and speaks with Smaug.

The dragon’s conversation with Bilbo is one of the book’s most important scenes. Bilbo notices a vulnerable area in Smaug’s armor and later communicates that information to Bard the Bowman. Bard uses it to kill the dragon during the attack on Lake-town.

The Lord of the Rings contains dragons in its wider history, and The Silmarillion recounts other famous dragons such as Glaurung. However, Smaug’s defining story belongs to The Hobbit. The character is also notable for being a speaking, intelligent dragon rather than merely a monster in the background.
