Which Tolkien son edited and prepared The Silmarillion for publication after his father’s death?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Tolkien edited and prepared The Silmarillion for publication after his father’s death.

J.R.R. Tolkien died in 1973, leaving behind many versions, notes, unfinished narratives, and conflicting passages concerning the mythology of Middle-earth. Christopher Tolkien worked through this extensive archive and arranged a publishable edition with assistance from the fantasy author Guy Gavriel Kay.

The Silmarillion was published in 1977. It presents the creation of the world, the history of the Valar, the awakening of the Elves, and the great struggles surrounding the Silmarils and Morgoth. Much of the material predates the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Christopher later published many additional volumes documenting and comparing his father’s drafts. He was not merely a copy editor: his editorial decisions shaped the form in which readers first encountered the posthumously assembled book.
