Which Tolkien novel was published first: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, or The Return of the King?

The story behind the answer

The Fellowship of the Ring was published first among Tolkien’s three-volume The Lord of the Rings.

George Allen & Unwin published it on 29 July 1954. The Two Towers followed later in 1954, and The Return of the King appeared in 1955. Together, the volumes tell one continuous story rather than three unrelated novels.

The first volume introduces the One Ring, Frodo Baggins’s inheritance from Bilbo, and the formation of the Fellowship in Rivendell. Its narrative follows the group until the fellowship breaks apart near Amon Hen.

The title can cause confusion because Tolkien intended The Lord of the Rings as a single work, while publishing and printing constraints led to its division into volumes. The separate volume titles are now central to how readers identify the story’s structure.
