Which Tolkien novel follows Bilbo Baggins’s nephew Frodo?

The story behind the answer

The Lord of the Rings follows Bilbo Baggins’s nephew Frodo.

The epic novel centers on Frodo’s mission to carry the One Ring from the Shire to Mount Doom, where it can be destroyed. He is joined by companions including Samwise Gamgee, Merry, Pippin and Aragorn, while the growing threat of Sauron shapes the story.

Tolkien wrote the work as a sequel to The Hobbit, but it became a much larger and darker narrative. Its story was published in three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. These volumes form one novel rather than three unrelated books.

Readers sometimes call it a trilogy because of its publication structure. Tolkien himself regarded it as a single continuous work, divided into six internal books and published in three physical volumes.
