What name is used for Aragorn in Bree in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Aragorn is known as Strider in Bree in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The name is used by the local people for the weathered ranger who watches the roads and arrives at the Prancing Pony.

At first, Frodo and his companions know Strider as a mysterious and capable traveler rather than as a royal heir. His true identity is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and he belongs to the Dúnedain of the North.

The alias helps conceal Aragorn’s lineage and reflects the way outsiders view him: a wandering ranger with long experience in the wild. Later, his royal destiny becomes central to the story, and he is crowned King Elessar after the War of the Ring.

Strider should not be confused with Elessar, which is Aragorn’s later royal name, or Thorongil, an earlier alias used during his travels in Gondor and Rohan.
