Which Tolkien novel features the hobbit protagonists Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee?

The story behind the answer

The Lord of the Rings features the hobbit protagonists Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee. Tolkien wrote the novel as a sequel to The Hobbit, but its scale and themes grew into a much larger epic.

Frodo inherits the One Ring from Bilbo Baggins and accepts the task of carrying it to Mount Doom, where it can be destroyed. Sam, Frodo’s gardener and companion, remains with him through the dangerous journey, including the passage through Mordor.

The work was published in three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring in 1954, The Two Towers in 1954, and The Return of the King in 1955. These are volumes of one novel rather than three unrelated novels, although many readers refer to them as a trilogy.

The story includes many other major characters, such as Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir. Its central conflict concerns the struggle to prevent Sauron from recovering and using the Ring to dominate Middle-earth.
