Which Tolkien novel contains the characters Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings contains the characters Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee.

The Lord of the Rings is a high-fantasy epic first published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955. Frodo inherits the One Ring and must carry it from the Shire to Mount Doom, where it can be destroyed. Sam, his gardener and closest companion, joins him and remains loyal through the journey.

The work is divided into The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Although often called a trilogy, Tolkien conceived it as one continuous novel. The three-volume format resulted largely from publishing and production considerations.

The Hobbit is the earlier novel in which Bilbo first finds the Ring. The Silmarillion instead presents mythic and historical material from the older Ages of Tolkien’s invented world. Frodo and Sam appear most extensively in The Lord of the Rings, where their friendship forms the emotional centre of the Ring quest.
