Quenya is the Tolkien language spoken by many of the Elves of Valinor.
Tolkien developed Quenya as an Elvish language inspired partly by Finnish, Latin, and Greek. In his fictional history, it was associated especially with the Ñoldor and Vanyar, Elven peoples who lived in Valinor, the Blessed Realm west of Middle-earth.
Quenya is not the same as Sindarin. Sindarin became the more widely used Elvish language in much of Middle-earth during the later ages, while Quenya often had a formal, literary, or ceremonial role. Tolkien created grammar, vocabulary, sound patterns, and historical changes for both languages.
Readers sometimes call Quenya simply “Elvish,” but Tolkien’s legendarium contains several Elvish languages and dialects. Quenya is also known as High-elven or High-elven speech in Tolkien’s terminology, making that name a useful clue when distinguishing it from Sindarin.
