Gollum speaks the line “My precious” about the One Ring in Tolkien’s stories.
Gollum was originally a river-dwelling Hobbit-like person named Sméagol. He obtained the Ring after his relative Déagol found it in the Anduin. Sméagol murdered Déagol for the Ring, then gradually became isolated and physically transformed into Gollum.
He possessed the Ring for centuries beneath the Misty Mountains, where its power prolonged his life but intensified his obsession. Bilbo Baggins later won the Ring from Gollum during the riddle contest in The Hobbit, although Bilbo did not initially understand its full importance.
“My precious” is strongly associated with the Ring, but Gollum’s relationship with it is more complicated than simple ownership. Tolkien presents the Ring as an object that exerts influence, while Gollum’s divided personality dramatizes his dependence and corruption.
