Which Tolkien character says “My precious” while possessing the One Ring?

The story behind the answer

Gollum says “My precious” while possessing the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.

Gollum was originally Sméagol, a river-dwelling member of a Hobbit-like people. He obtained the Ring after Déagol found it in the Anduin. Sméagol murdered Déagol to keep it, and the Ring’s influence gradually drove him into isolation beneath the Misty Mountains.

The Ring became central to Gollum’s identity, and he repeatedly calls it “my precious.” Bilbo encounters him during the events of The Hobbit and wins the Ring by solving a riddle contest. Much later, Gollum guides Frodo and Sam toward Mordor, while secretly planning to recover the object.

Gollum is distinct from Bilbo and Frodo, who also possess the Ring at different times. His divided self, expressed through the names Sméagol and Gollum, is one of Tolkien’s most important portrayals of corruption and divided loyalty.
