Which Tolkien character kills the dragon Glaurung in The Silmarillion?
Answer
Túrin Turambar
Answer
Túrin Turambar
Túrin Turambar kills the dragon Glaurung in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion.
Túrin kills Glaurung at Cabed-en-Aras by stabbing him from below with the sword Gurthang. The dragon has crossed into Brethil and has caused devastation connected with the tragic history of Túrin’s family. Túrin hides in a ravine and strikes when Glaurung passes over him.
The scene belongs to the First Age story later known as “Of Túrin Turambar.” Glaurung is the first of the great dragons in Tolkien’s legendarium and serves Morgoth, the chief enemy of the Elves and Men during that age. His speech and hypnotic gaze make him a powerful and manipulative antagonist, not merely a destructive beast.
This episode is sometimes confused with other dragon-slaying stories in Tolkien’s mythology. Beren does not kill Glaurung, and Eärendil’s most famous dragon victory is against Ancalagon the Black, much later in the First Age.
