Treebeard is the chief Ent encountered in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. His Sindarin name is Fangorn, and he is one of the oldest living beings in Middle-earth.
Treebeard lives in Fangorn Forest and meets Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took after they escape from the Orcs. The hobbits tell him about Saruman’s destruction of trees, helping persuade the Ents to hold an Entmoot and march against Isengard.
Ents are tree-like shepherds created to care for the trees. Tolkien’s depiction reflects his recurring concern with industrial damage to the natural world, especially the contrast between forests and Saruman’s mechanized war-making. Treebeard is not simply an ordinary talking tree: he belongs to an ancient people with their own language, customs, and history.
