Martin Freeman played Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit film trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel.
Bilbo is the central character of The Hobbit. He begins as a respectable hobbit of Bag End and is drawn into an adventure when the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves arrive at his home. The company travels to the Lonely Mountain, where Bilbo becomes involved in the attempt to recover the dwarves’ ancestral treasure from Smaug.
Freeman portrayed Bilbo in Peter Jackson’s three films: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies. The films were released between 2012 and 2014 and expand the relatively short novel with material connected to Tolkien’s wider history.
Bilbo is often confused with Frodo Baggins, who is the main hobbit protagonist of The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo also appears in that story as Frodo’s older cousin and guardian, and he originally possessed the ring later identified as the One Ring.
