Which Tolkien character is known as Eärendil's wife in The Silmarillion?

The story behind the answer

Elwing is the wife of Eärendil in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion.

Elwing is a Half-elven woman descended from the royal houses of both Elves and Men. She marries Eärendil the Mariner, and together they become the parents of Elrond and Elros. Their family connects several major lines in Tolkien's mythology and later leads to the different choices made by their sons.

During the assault on the Havens of Sirion, Elwing escapes with the Silmaril that Beren and Lúthien once recovered from Morgoth's crown. She later joins Eärendil, who carries the Silmaril on his voyage to seek aid from the Valar against Morgoth.

Elwing is sometimes confused with Idril, who is Eärendil's mother, or with Lúthien, who is an earlier ancestor. Tolkien's genealogies are deliberately interwoven, but these women occupy different generations. Elwing's importance comes especially from her marriage, her possession of the Silmaril, and her role in the ancestry of both Elves and Men.
