Which Tolkien character carries the sword Sting in The Hobbit?
Answer
Bilbo Baggins
Answer
Bilbo Baggins
Bilbo Baggins carries the sword Sting in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Bilbo finds the blade in a troll-hoard together with two other Elvish swords. The weapons had been made in Gondolin during the First Age, although the characters do not initially know their full history. Because Sting is small compared with a human sword, it suits a Hobbit’s size and is first treated almost like a knife.
The blade’s distinctive property is that it glows blue when Orcs or other enemies associated with them are nearby. Bilbo uses it during the journey to Erebor and names it Sting after fighting giant spiders in Mirkwood.
Sting later passes to Frodo Baggins, who carries it during the quest to destroy the One Ring. This creates a common mix-up: both Hobbits wield Sting, but Bilbo is the character who first finds and names it in The Hobbit.
